Care ratios describe how many caregivers support a particular number of clients within an arrangement.
A ratio is only one part of care planning. The appropriate staffing level should follow assessment of each person's needs and circumstances.
What Does 1:1 Care Mean?
A 1:1 arrangement means one caregiver supports one client.
Whether this is appropriate depends on the person's assessed support needs, circumstances and the practical arrangement being considered.
What Does 2:1 Care Mean?
A 2:1 arrangement means two caregivers support one client where additional assistance is required.
The need for two caregivers should be identified through assessment. It should not be selected simply because a higher ratio sounds preferable.
What Does 2:2 Care Mean?
A 2:2 arrangement means two caregivers support two clients where the arrangement is suitable for both individuals' care needs.
Each person's needs, preferences and circumstances still require individual consideration. Sharing a ratio does not make their support needs identical.
Why Might Different Staffing Levels Be Needed?
Relevant considerations can include:
- assessed support needs
- the level and type of assistance required
- the individual's circumstances and communication
- safety and practical considerations
- whether the proposed staffing arrangement is appropriate and sustainable
Where needs are more complex, a discussion about specialist care or learning disability support may be relevant, but the service and staffing level must still be considered individually.
Who Decides the Appropriate Arrangement?
The decision should be assessment-led and made with appropriate involvement from the person receiving support and others relevant to the care-planning process.
